If Opposition has majority hand over CPC - Mahinda

by Kandy Group Corr.

If the UNP led Opposition has the majority in the Central Provincial Council, it should be handed over to them without trying to hang on, said Mahinda Rajapakse MP, Leader of the Opposition in reply to a question asked by journalists when he met them following a visit to the Dalada Maligawa and paying obeisance to the Malwatte and Asgiriya Maha Nayake Theras yesterday.

The Opposition also said it is best to hand over the CPC prior to the conclusion of the Court Case on the issue and the Opposition should withdraw the casein that event. He also said that he does not approve the harassment of employees of various Ministries by not paying their salaries on account of the crisis in the CPC.

Referring to the Press Conference held by Prabhakaran, the Opposition Leader said that the LTTE had placed their policy clearly before the country and it is not beneficial to have a soft policy towards the LTTE.

'If the Government is convinced that peace could be achieved through negotiations, it should take that path with a clear standpoint. He promised full cooperation of the Opposition to the peace effort if it is conducted in a way that is not detrimental to the unitary status of the country and if it does not entail any injustices to the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities.

The Leader of the Opposition also said that a reform of the SLFP will be launched soon and that he would meet the Prime Minister after the New Year in order to get remanded party activists released.
