Pillion rider dies in accident

Weerasingha Upul (26) of Hadugala-Walasmulla, the pillion rider of a motorcycle died of injuries sustained in a fall from the motorcycle.

Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Matara H. B. Cyril de Silva conducted the inquest at the Matara Hospital premises.

Weerasinghage Dayarathna and H. G. Kumarasiri gave evidence at the inquest. Mawarala police led evidence.

The autopsy on the death was performed by Dr. L. B. M. Fernando Judicial Medical Officer, Matara who certified that the death was caused by shock and excessive haemorrhage from a road accident.

Having considered the post-mortem examination report and the evidence available, Inquirer recorded a verdict of accidental death.

The rider of the motorcycle was also seriously injured in the accident.

Bak Maha Ulela at Pelawatta on April 18

Bak Maha Ulela (New Year Festival) organised by the Cultural Affairs Division of the Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry under the direction of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr.Karunasena Kodithuwakku will be held on April 18 at the Gramodaya Janakala Kendraya, Pelawatta from 9.00 am onwards, a Cultural Affairs Division spokesman said.

He said that the festival will consist of several traditional cultural items such as Porapol geseema, Chakgudu Peneema, Onchili waram and traditional folk games such as cross country, climbing the greasy pole. A Panchakalyani competition will also be held. A traditional cultural show including Ruhunu Daha Ata Sanniya, Udarata Wesnetum, Kolam, puppetry show and old tower hall songs will be presented from 7.00 pm onwards.

All traditional sweetmeats including Kevum, Kokis, Asmee, Aluva and Murukku will be made during the festival and will be sold to the visitors. Agricultural products (edible tubes) such as Manioc, sweet potatoes and Dannila will also be cooked and available for sale.

Traditional Sri Lankan art works will also available at several trade stalls. Competitions will be open only for the residents of Kaduwela Divisional Secretariat division. Applications are available at the Kaduwela Divisional Secretariat. Trade stalls can be reserved by contacting the director of Gramodaya Jana Kala Kendraya.

'Smiling Sri Lanka' for tourists

A booklet titled 'Smiling Sri Lanka' compiled by the Tourist Board was issued freely to the tourists arriving to Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike International Airport Katunayake on Friday, April 5.

This booklet contains information relating to the leading hotels and places of interest providing them with higher percentage of discounts and concessions offered by the Hoteliers islandwide.

Already these booklets are posted to our missions abroad to promote tourism, said an official of the Tourist Board.

Negombo Hoteliers' Association Past President Anthony Fernando told the Daily News that this move was most welcome and the situation in the country presently has changed. It is likely more tourists will visit Sri Lanka.

Cancer ward opened at A'pura hospital

A fully-fledged cancer ward including an expert surgical service was opened at the Anuradhapura General Hospital recently under the patronage of Anuradhapura District branch of the Sri Lanka Cancer Association.

The new cancer ward was opened by North Central Province Health Services Director W. M. T. B. Wijekoon, has two cancer specialists and surgeons.

The establishment of this cancer ward in the Anuradhapura General Hospital will facilitate treatment for cancer patients from areas like Batticaloa, Jaffna and Trincomalee who had to travel to Colombo or Kandy for treatment.

HR Service Provider exhibition

The Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (Inc.) is organising an exhibition of Human Resource Service Providers at the BMICH on May 17. This event is being organised to coincide with the Human Resource Management Annual Conference which will be held on May 17 and 18 at the BMICH.

The exhibition is open to all training institutes, recruiting agencies, computer software vendors, management consultants, career counsellors etc. who are the service providers for human resources. The annual conference will have four sessions and there will be an array of reputed speakers drawn from Sri Lanka and overseas.

Over four hundred participants are expected at the conference and the first ever HR Service Provider exhibition will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on this day.
