Dudley Waas President SLIA

At the recently concluded Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects, Dudley Waas assumed office as President of the Institute for the second term. He completed his first term in office with the successful completion of the institute's annual exhibition and public forum on the theme "Urban Renaissance through City Architecture". A feature of this year's forum was the participation by seven foreign speakers on the subject, including Arch. Josep A. Acebillo, the chief architect for the City of Barcelona and its Mayor in the build up to the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and Archt. Ragupathy Sambasivam, the Project Manager for Petronas Towers, Malaysia, the world's tallest building.

Dudley Waas is a Fellow of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects and a Corporate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

He is an old boy of St. Benedict's College, Colombo. He entered the then University of Ceylon, Colombo in 1964, to study engineering, but changed over to architecture when the course was conducted at what is now the University of Moratuwa. He continued his post graduate studies in architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture of the University of London.

Whilst at St. Benedict's College, Dudley Waas took an active part in sports and extra curricular activities. He was a member of the College all island champion junior basketball teams for three years. He represented the College junior cricket team from 1959 to 1961. He was the junior athletics champion in 1961.

Whilst at the Colombo University, he was the Sports Secretary of the Science Students Union. He represented the Faculty of Science at cricket, basketball, football, table tennis and hockey. He won Colombo University Colours for basket ball.

Since completing his architectural training at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London he lived and worked in England for seven years and in Zambia for three years. He worked for the British Civil Service and several British architectural practices, including Sir Frederick Gibberd and Partners, who were the architects for London's famous Coutts Bank, Piccadilly Hotel, Heathrow Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, Liverpool Cathedral and Regents Park Mosque, both competition winning buildings.

They were also the architects for the City Centre developments such as the Harlow New Town and Basildon New Town. He also worked for Sir Siefert and Partners who were the architects for London's Centre Point and National Westminster Bank Headquarters in Holborn. Some of the buildings he worked on included Piccadily Hotel London, Liverpool Centre Hotel, Administration Centre for the British Steel Corporation Scunthorpe, Marks and Spencer Departmental Store in Folkstone, 54 houses for sale in High Wycombe, Council office extension in High Wycombe and Richard Shops Chain Stores.
