Seven who waylaid bus arrested

The Nochchiyagama Police has taken into custody seven suspects of the armed gang which waylaid the Colombo - Mannar bus on the 9th night and robbed its passengers of cash and jewellery. Part of the cash and jewellery had been recovered.

The bus left Colombo at 1 am on the 9th. The armed gang waylaid the bus between Kalaoya and Nochchiyagama.

A group of police personnel led by the Officer-In-Charge of the Crime Bureau of the Nochchiyagama Police, Tissa Iddamaldeniya apprehended the seven culprits from different parts of the island and were able to recover jewellery worth Rs. 269,000 and Rs. 150,000 cash.

The police has received information that these suspects are scattered in different parts of the country and coordinate with each other to commit crimes. The suspects are residents of Padaviya, Rajanganaya, Colombo, Matugama, Chilaw and Nochchiyagama.

Nochchiyagama police are conducting further inquiries.
