by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Be warned! Driving under the influence of liquor and festive fire crackers can kill or harm you during this festive season, Colombo National Hospital (CNH) authorities said yesterday. Last year, the number of victims, though lower than in previous years, was still significant. A total of 1,319 persons sought treatment at the CNH from April 12 to 16 last year, hospital records reveal. Seven deaths were also reported during this period. Of them, the highest number of patients - 343 - were victims of road mishaps, the majority of whom had been driving under the influence of liquor, Ms. Pushpa Zoysa, Training Coordinator - Accident and Orthopaedic Service at CNH told the Daily News. Victims of violent incidents during this period had increased, hospital authorities said. "Around 270 such victims of violence had been treated at the CNH during the corresponding period last year." Although there has been a decline in the number of fire-cracker victims over the last three years, the danger still exists. The decline was mainly due to the awareness campaign launched by the Health authorities during festive periods. A number of children and adults lost their fingers. Some lost the use of their hands due to cracker explosions. In one case, a man under the influence of liquor exploded a cracker in his mouth. Besides, admissions at the CNH increased significantly during the festive period in January over the corresponding period of last year. |
