Peace university to be set up

by Manjula Fernando

A Peace university dedicated for those affected by the war will be set up by the Ministry of Tertiary and Training Ministry in Trincomalee shortly, official sources told the Daily News yesterday.

The university will be set up affiliated to a technical college or another national university to provide professional and self employment training for civilians in the war affected areas, disabled soldiers and children from displaced families.

According to sources there will be no age limit barrier for the entrants. The Ministry in consultation with other stake holders will set up guidelines for the selection criteria.

The ministry has already conducted a preliminary feasibility study in Trincomalee to assess the viability of the area to set up the peace university. The total cost for the project is yet to be finalised.

"The government is committed to ensure that those who suffered due to this prolonged ethnic conflict which robbed civilians and disabled soldiers, of their right to lead a normal life have a smooth integration into the rest of the society and that they will not be forgotten in the history," sources said.

Minister Kabeer Hasheem held talks with the French Ambassador Marie France Pagnier Dunavan recently to seek French assistance to set up this peace university on an accelerated program.

She had pledged financial and other assistance to the project saying that her government would be happy to be part of a project that would ensure higher education facilities to a faction of the society that had been torn apart by the ethnic war which prevailed for nearly two decades in Sri Lanka. Ms.Dunavan had also promised to get support from the European Union member countries for this project.
