Auspicious times for the New Year

The Aluth Avurudda dawns tomorrow Sunday April 14 morning at 6.19.

The no-nekata or the inauspicious period began at 11.55 tonight (Saturday 13). It will continue till 12.43 pm tomorrow Sunday Observed with devotion, fan fare and ceremony the Sinhala and Hindu people during the no-nekata period visit the viharas and kovils with offerings to the Buddha and Hindu pantheon of gods.

However, according to astrological calculations the waning moments in the inauspicious period have been prescribed for the celebrations of the different facets of the Avurudu rituals.

This year, the auspicious colours are a blending of red and yellow and the auspicious direction is the East.

According to astrological prescription, the following are the auspicious moments:

Lighting of the hearth

Sunday, 14 at 7.11 am dressed in red and yellow coloured garments and facing the East the hearth should be lit to prepare kiribath and sweets made out of ghee and gingelly seeds.

Starting new ventures, making of transactions and partaking of the first new year meal.

At 8.12 am dressed in red and yellow garments facing the East to partake the first meal after performing new year transactions.

Annointing of the head and Bathing for the New Year

On Monday 15 at 11.36 am. Head should be annointed with a herbal juice made out of divul leaves and oil. The correct and the efficacious way for the bathing ceremony is to stand on a carpet of imbul leaves and standing under a canopy of divul leaves and bathing facing the east.

Siting on the New Year's Moon also falls on Monday 15 evening.

Setting out for work for the New Year

At 7.58 on Wednesday 17 morning. Before leaving it is prescribed to partake in a meal of kiribath cooked with a mixture of gingelly seeds.

The colour used for this occasion is green. One must set out facing the East.

However, according to exigencies of services those required to be on duty before this day are advised to leave for work on Monday 15 at 7.23 in the morning.

Those doing so are advised to partake of a meal of kiribath and drink milk wearing garments made of white material. The direction they too have to face is the East.
