by Manjula Fernando The Education Ministry under its 100 day program has made arrangements to introduce 'General IT' as an optional subject in the GCE Advanced Level curriculum from this year so as to open up opportunities for all A/L students to pursue higher education in IT. "This A/L IT project will be implemented in 1000 schools this year as a pilot project and will be extended to all senior schools in 2003," official sources at the Education Ministry said. The subject will focus on teaching students the fundamentals of the Information Technology so that all A/L students regardless of their study area can pursue higher Education in this field. It has also been designed to provide important IT skills for school leavers to enter the job market just after school, sources said. Training of 1800 A/L teachers to teach this new subject has now been completed by the National Institute of Education (NIE). Among them 300 teachers were selected from the North East schools. According to him preparation of Handbooks and other teacher guides is almost completed now. The Ministry in collaboration with the World Link Program, conducted a series of workshops countrywide including the North and East to create awareness on the introduction of this new subject to A/L. The last workshop was conducted in the Jaffna district in February this year. The target groups were parents, students, teachers and education officers. |
