Police ban torch light marches ahead of Bangladesh opposition strike

DHAKA, April 5 (AFP) - Bangladeshi police on Friday banned torch-light marches aimed at firing up support for a one-day strike to protest against heavy-handed police and government tactics.

A police statement said such marches could "create panic among the public and pose a threat to the public life and property", putting the ban in place until further notice.

The main opposition Awami League party had called for a torch light march late Friday to drum up support for a nationwide one-day general strike on Saturday to protest against repressive police and government actions and policies.

"These are undemocratic actions by the government and we will stage our march," an Awami League spokesman said.

The Awami League, which has boycotted parliament since it was thrown out of power in elections in October last year, has threatened that its 58 MPs will resign en masse in protest at what it called government persecution against its supporters.
