Sri Lanka to host WC qualifying game for first time

It is a great honour for Sri Lanka to host a World Cup rugby qualifying match for the first time when it takes on China at Longden Place on Sunday said the President of the SLRFU Commodore Harsha Mayadunne at a press briefing regarding the World Cup qualifying match held at Colombo Hilton on Thursday.

He said that Sri Lanka was confident of overcoming China and Kazakhstan in the next game on April 21 in Kazakhstan and enter the second round of the World Cup. He thanked BCC Lanka Ltd. for coming forward to sponsor the China match and hoped that the firm will continue to promote rugby in a big way. He also paid a glowing tribute to Plantation Industries Minister Lakshman Kiriella who during his tenure as sports minister distributed funds to needy rugby playing clubs and helped the SLRFU to conduct the Under 19 Rugby Asiad in Colombo two years ago.

He hoped that deputy Plantation Industries Minister Naveen Dissanayake will also promote sports in Sri Lanka in a big way as his father the late Gamini Dissanayake made a great contribution to uplift sports especially cricket as he was instrumental in Sri Lanka obtaining Test status in 1981.

Deputy minister of Plantation Industries Naveen Dissanayake said that they appointed a new management for BCC Lanka Ltd. hoping to make it a profit making company. He hoped that BCC Lanka will be able to promote sports in a big way in the future and even sponsor international sporting events which will be held in Sri Lanka. He was confident that the WC qualifying match will be a great success and BCC Lanka will gain mileage by sponsoring this game.
