Oliver Silva and Sarath Samaranayake The Special Investigating Unit of the Kandy Police arrested a former Police Officer of the Katugastota Police and a leading businessman of Kandy as suspects in the double murder of wife and daughter of Professor Nimal Seneviratne attached to the Engineering Faculty of the Peradeniya University. The arrest is the result of an intensive and extensive investigation over a long period made by a Police Team headed by Kandy S.S.P. Asoka Ratnaweera. On the instructions of Central Province DIG Nimal Mediwaka, a police team under IP Gurusinghe of the Kandy Police made the arrests. On March 27, the two suspects were produced before the Kandy Chief Magistrate C.V. Rajapakse who remanded them till April 10. The incident of double murder that took place on July 25, last year wherein the Professor's wife Amitha Kumari Seneviratne(42) and daughter Ransika Sakunie Seneviratne(14) were brutally killed in the Professor's residence at Rajasinghe II Mawatha, Gatambe, Kandy, roused a huge uproar in the country. According to police investigations, a land dispute is alleged to be the motive for the killings while the businessman suspect is alleged to be a false deeds maker who is closely associated with the other suspect who is a former Police Officer. Kandy SSP Asoka Ratnaweera, ASP Kulasiri Udugampola, IP Farook, SI Sirisena, SI Chinthaka Bandara, PS Samarakoon, PS Dissanayake, PS Ranaweera, PS Samarasinghe, PC Weerakoon, PC Ananda, PC Bandara and PC Jayaratne of Kandy Police comprised the Team that conducted investigations in to this crime. |
