Social Security policies for self employed

by Kandy North Special correspondent

A ceremony to hand over the Pension and Social Security Scheme Policies and certificates of appreciation together with mementoes to self employed persons and employees in the informal sector in the Kandy District was recently held at the Kandy District Coordinating Office of the Sri Lanka Social Security Board, functioning under the Social Services Ministry.

The Social Services Minister Ravindra Samaraweera attended the ceremony as its Chief Guest.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Samaraweera stated that educational inadequacy is the main cause behind the escalating violence tendency in the country and that the Social Services Ministry, in order to counter this trend, is embarking on a programme to identify the non school going children who are in the school going age group and help them to receive a formal education. This programme will be implemented through the Divisional Secretariats of the respective Districts, said the Minister.

Central Region Development Minister Tissa Attanayake, in his address stated that the concept of Social Security Programme was first mooted out in Sri Lanka by the late Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Sir Ivor Jennings as far back as 1948 but the vision remained confined to records. What is needed today is not simple dole outs but positive measures to get the poor people participate in the development process as a means to alleviate their poverty.

Kandy District MP Chitra Srimathie Manthilaka, Kandy District Secretary Sumana Bandara Beddewela, Additional District Secretary K.A.S.D.Kehelwalatenne, Sri Lanka Social Security Board Chairman D.B.Bogahakumbura, Social Services Ministry Community Training Directress M.J.Samarasinghe and the Kandy District Social Security Coordinating Officer Nimal Gunasekera were present on the occasion.
