by Telwatte group correspondent Two hundred and twenty Euro currency notes have been handed back to two German tourists, before the Chief Magistrate Galle, when the Hikkaduwa police produced the suspect who burgled the foreign currency along with Sri Lanka money from a tourist hotel in Hikkaduwa tourist resort recently. The suspect Wickrama Chandrasiri de Silva of Ahungalla was produced before Chief Magistrate Galle M. B. S. Moraes by the Hikkaduwa police. On questioning by the police it was revealed that the suspect had entered the Blue Coral Hotel Hikkaduwa and broke open the safe and taken about four lakhs of rupees. On the following day he had purchased a trishaw for rupees one lakh sixty nine thousand out of the stolen money. The suspect was produced before the Magistrate along with the trishaw, Euro notes and rupees twenty six thousand. On court order the Euro currency were handed over to two German tourists who appeared before the Magistrate. Euro 450 currency notes were handed over to Miss Christian Dore and Euro 70 notes to Miss Berkid Marteni of Germany. According to the police those Euro currency were deposited in the hotel safe where they were staying for safety. The balance of local currency valued at Rs. 26,000 were in custody. The magistrate has allowed rupees one lakh bail for the suspect along with two sureties with one lakh of rupees each and postponed further inquiry on to 12th July 2002. |
