Several efforts had been made to find a solution to the ethnic war in our country which has been on for two decades. The military effort has proved to be disastrous and has caused widespread misery, especially among the poorest of all communities. Today we are left with an impoverished nation, states the Sri Lankan Movement for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Central Council. The signing of the MOU between the Government and the LTTE is the first sign of confidence-building between the estranged parties to the conflict that has plagued the country. With cautious determination they should forge ahead, and see that the people's expectations are realized. All peace-loving people have heaved a sigh of relief after the thawing of hate and mistrust between the two ethnic groups. We appeal to every Sri Lankan, individually and collectively, to work untiringly towards achieving a lasting peace, by promoting unity and understanding between people of all races, castes and creeds. |
