Prime Minister's message Good Friday is one of the most important days for Christians in their religious calendar. All Christians around the world recognize Good Friday on which Jesus Christ sacrificed His life to deliver mankind from all evil. We in Sri Lanka who are heir to the four great religions of the world Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity need to be inspired by His teachings and to work always for the betterment of our less privileged brothers and sisters. We should develop noble qualities of tolerance, understanding, co-existence and brotherhood. Irrespective of the superficial differences in race, religion, caste and creed, we must continue to live together maintaining the sanctity of life for all of us in this our precious country. We should endeavour to understand the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ and our other religious leaders in the name of peace and goodwill and rise to the joy of bringing about a new life to all our brethren in Sri Lanka. The Government is making every effort to bring back peace to our country and to make Sri Lanka a pleasant and comfortable place where all of us can live in harmony. On this Good Friday let us all resolve to work together for peace, reconciliation and harmony in our country. Opposition Leader's message Good Friday is no doubt a sacred day for all Christians, when they commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. Even non-Christians think of this day as a sad day when the life of a Great Teacher was put to death for no fault of His. It is therefore, in the fitness of things that we too remember this great sacrifice and try to mould our lives as set out in His great teachings. His enemies thought this was to be the end, but His thoughts and teaching continue to bring much inspiration to all mankind. May this day be not only a sacred day for Christians, but also for others to help us to understand suffering and death. |
