by Ravi Ladduwahetty The Government has already opened up the ports of Kankesanthurai and Point Pedro for commercial operations, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake told the Daily News last night. This follows traders and businessmen from Jaffna meeting with Minister Karunanayake about these possibilities. The Minister had taken up this matter with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who had promptly approved the opening up of the two Northern ports. This will mean that there will be business between the Indian ports such as Cochin and Tuticorin and the two Northern ports where Indian cargoes will be unloaded from the North and transported by road or by rail to Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka, he said. This will result in Indian imports being cheaper due to lower freight costs and faster delivery times, he said. |
