War on terrorism must respect democratic values: French FM GENEVA, March 25 (AFP) French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine said Monday it was important to respect democratic values during the fight against terrorism. Vedrine said in an interview with Swiss television that the war on terrorism was being waged in the name of the West's democratic values, and he indirectly criticised the United States. He said it was important for the United States, which is reported to be mulling military action against Iraq despite concern from allies in Europe, to "re-engage in the multilateral system." "We cannot reduce all the world's problems to the war against terrorism, and to military solutions," he said, speaking ahead of his address to the ongoing session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Vedrine has repeatedly criticised the United States for what he said was a unilateral and simplistic approach to the war on terrorism, drawing a sharp rebuke from Washington. |
