Mahanama replies

In response to the BCCSL press release which appeared in these columns on March 21, former Sri lanka cricketer and 'A' team coach Roshan Mahanama writes:

"Since there is every possibility that the news paper reports relating to my resignation might create an impression which I am only too anxious to dispel, I cannot do better than release herewith the letter of resignation which I forwarded to the BCCSL.

I would like the public to know that in no way recent the prior appointment of Hemantha Devapriya as the Sri Lanka 'A' Team Coach, he is after all a fellow cricketer who has played both for Sri Lanka and as well my old school Nalanda. My letter of resignation should amply make this clear.

Letter of resignation

"After a great deal of soul searching with regret I request a release from my contract as Head Coach/Manager of the Sri Lanka 'A' team with effect from 15th March 2002.

"The reason for this is not one which lends itself easily to precise definition. It is basically one of human relationships. When I accepted the assignment it was on the assumption that my predecessor's contract had been terminated. I was surprised later, to discover that my senior colleague at Nalanda and my brother's teammate, Hemantha Devapriya's contract was still in force.

"When he brought this to my notice I realised the immense hurt caused to him by this anomalous situation. I assured him of my ignorance. When I discussed this matter with you and some members of the Interim Committee. I was informed that it would be resolved in due course. In the interim, I was appointed Head Coach/Manager with Hemantha continuing as Coach.
