Master forger arrested

Anuruddha Ratnayake who obtained employment at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) as an engineer forging the signature of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was arrested at a Slave Island hotel by the Criminal Investigation Department officials yesterday evening.

Investigations revealed that Ratnayake had been employed at the Kukulegama CEB project as the engineer untill early this month.

The CID also took into custody three other suspects who were alleged to have obtained employment at a Government bank by tendering documents with the forged signature of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The CID also arrested an artist from Kandy who is alleged to have forged the signatures of the President and the Prime Minister.

Investigations revealed that Ratnayake had first obtained employment at the Police Department as a constable by forging certificates.

The CID is looking for a brother of Ratnayake who has joined the Police Department as an ASP on forged documents. Ratnayake's brother had been attached to the Dambulla Police until last week.

The investigators took into custody from the possession of Ratnayake a degree certificate from the Manchester University and a degree certificate from a Russian University. The CID said that they are conducting investigations to ascertain the authencity of these certificates.

The CID also took into custody several items used to forge the certificates including the rubber stamp with the signature of the Prime Minister's Secretary Bradman Weerakoon.

The suspects will be produced before a Magistrate today, the CID officials said.
