"Sink differences and move forward to lasting peace"

Remember now is the time. It is the last chance for democracy. Let all forget parties, join hands and move forward in this march to a difficult yet lasting peace' said Social Services and Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera last Saturday evening.

The Minister who was Chief Guest addressing a public meeting held at the auditorium of the Madampe Divisional Secretariat after he opened a 'Social Services Advisory Centre' on the premises of the Madampe Divisional Secretariat. Associated with the Social Services Minister was Puttalam District MP and UNP Administrative Authority for the Puttalam District Neomal Perera. Among others present were North Western Provincial Councillor Ayub Khan, Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Janaka Soyza, Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha member Lalith Ananda, Chilaw Urban Council Chairman M. Sweeny Perera, Chilaw Urban Councillor, W. Michael Fernando, Dr. Chaminda Alwis, Puttalam GA Ravi Jayalath Dissanayake, Social Services Ministry Secretary V. Segarajasingham and a mumber of other government officials. The address of welcome was given by Madampe Divisional Secretary S.M.L. Chandrasiri.

Minister Samaraweera said that it was useless setting up buildings and providing all the services if the Government did not get closer to the people. The Social Services Ministry is not a new ministry. It deals with about forty per cent of the community life of the people.

He said: "We gave free books from the time of the late J.R. Jayewardene. We gave free school uniforms from the time of the late President R. Premadasa.

"We intend providing a pension scheme not only for public servants but even for the rural people as well. We also intend helping another set of people who hav'nt the basic requirements of life. They are from the North and the East," the Minister said.

Puttalam District MP Neomal Perera said advertisements went a long way in influencing the ways and habits of the people.
