by Kelaniya group correspondent The UNP won a landslide victory winning 217 out of 222 local bodies at the Local Government polls held on March 20 mostly due to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's charismatic leadership and vision to take action to solve the ethnic problem thus winning confidence of the people, said Gampaha District MP Ravindra Randeniya. He was addressing the newly elected UNP PS Members of Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha and UNP supporters, after winning the Mahara PS by the UNP candidates. He said that the PA lost its strongholds at Attanagalla, Gampaha, Dompe and Mahara Pradeshiya Sabhas for the first time in the local Government elections. To bring an end to ethnic war, which has caused widespread devastation economically to Sri Lanka, the UNF government under the leadership of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, took a bold initiative to commence peace talks and signed a ceasefire agreement with the LTTE. The steam-rolling majority that the UNP received at the local polls clearly shows that people have accepted the policies of the UNF and have cast their votes to achieve its objectlives soon. He thanked the voters of Mahara and also the whole country for the great victory of the UNP. Although the PA and the JVP have painted a false picture about the ceasefire agreement the people were not deceived this time. |
