UNP wins Digamadulla

The United National Front took over the control of all eight local government bodies securing a total of 68 seats at Monday's polls conducted in the Sinhalese populated areas of the Digamadulla district. The total number of votes received by the UNF was 62,238.

The People's Alliance had received a total of 24,866 votes which won them 21 seats in the eight local government bodies. The JVP came third with 7,291 votes and four seats.

An independent group came ahead of the JVP at Dehiattakandiya, winning one seat. Another independent group also won a seat at Dehiattakandiya. The JVP did not win any seats at the Ampara Urban Council. The New Left Front contested for the Ampara UC, but obtained only 10 votes.

The election was held to elect representatives to the Ampara Urban Council (UNP 7 seats, PA two seats) and the Pradeshiya Sabhas of Namaloya (UNP 6, PA 2), Lahugala (UNP 8, PA 3), Dehiattakandiya (UNP 14, PA 4, Ind. Group I 1 seat, JVP 1, Ind.Group 3 1 seat) Damana (UNP 7, PA 2), Padiyatalawa (UNP 8, PA 2 and JVP 1), Uhana (UNP 11, PA 3 and JVP 1) and Mahaoya (UNP 7, PA 3).

Over 65 per cent of voters (103,251) turned up at the 136 polling stations to select 96 representatives for these local government bodies. There were 5,723 rejected votes. The number of registered voters are 142,466.

The election was described by Ampara Returning Officer L. Siriwardhane and independent election monitoring organisations as a peaceful one with only minor incidents, mostly intra-party squabbles reported. "Conditions on the whole were peaceful and orderly," said a news release issued by Kingsley Rodrigo, Executive Director of the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL).
