Colombo Super Cross on Saturday & Sunday

The much-awaited Colombo Super Cross 2002 will be worked off at Battaramulla on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March 2002. The event organised by the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee will see some of the top names in local racing scene wying for the championship.

Dinesh Deheragoda, the defending champion who is scheduled to take part in the Super Cross will compete in two main categories. Namely, jeeps and trucks (open) and motorcars (Group M) over 1665cc. Deheragoda secured the first place in both categories last year.

Deheragoda who is being sponsored by Untied Motors Lanka Limited (UMLL) will race in his famous Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII, which he drove to victory at the recently concluded Katukurunda races. Last year, he drove the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV. He will drive the Pajero evolution in the jeeps and truck category.

The first FIA standard rally organised by the Motor Racing Association (MRA) proved to be a memorable win for Dinesh as he carried away the awards for Class Winner and overall winner of MRA rally 2002. He also won what is considered to be the biggest event of the SLARDAR Championship 2002 - Group M and T Cars up to 3500cc. The Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) organised the event.

Untied Motors, has come forward to sponsor the two events in which Deheragoda participates. Apart from this, the crowds will be able to see the new Montero to which was introduced to Sri Lanka recently by UMLL and the new L200 Double Cab a racing machine which won the first place in its category at the Dakar rally considered to be one of the msot gruelling international races. Dakar has been a winning ground for Mitsubishi vehicles.

Team Mitsubishi swept the Dakar rally this year by securing the first eight positions. This was the seventh win for the Mitsubishi team at the Dakar rally.
