Naresh - national snooker champion

The National Snooker Championship for the year 2002 was held at the Association premises Race Course, Reid Avenue on March 17 with the participation of a large crowd to witness an exciting final which surprised many.

Since the inception, and during the past four decades the National Champions of Snooker or Billiards always emerged from Colombo District. This is the first occasion an outstation lad, Naresh Samarawickrema of Galle YMBA became the national champion beating many talented and experienced players. His cool and calculated approach if maintained, could open a bright future for him.

In the final, he beat an experienced player and a past champion, M. J. Mansoor by 7 frames to four. Mansoor is no new comer to the game. He is a well recognised sportsman whom even the opponents admire and respect. D. G. Daluwatte, an International Referee officiated the matches.

At the awards ceremony followed by the final the chief guest, Thilanga Sumathipala stressed the need for hard work to promote the Game since sponsorships for Cue games are not sufficiently forthcoming.

Shafeek Rajabdeen, a past president and the guest of honour explained the difficulties experienced and appreciated the hard work under trying conditions of the President and other officials to have a successful awards ceremony.

A. P. P. Somaratne, the Vice President compered while Mervyn Jayasinghe Vice President and Dharshan Peiris, Hony. General Secretary graced the occasion.
