SB denies violence at Hanguranketha

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Samurdhi, Agriculture and Livestock Minister S.B. Dissanayake vehemently denied the statements made by certain media that violent acts have occurred in the Hanguranketha electorate.

Commenting on the PAFFREL statement, Minister Dissanayake said PAFFREL has only mentioned that there were no PA polling agents in polling stations. They have not mentioned about any violent incidents in Hanguranketha area.

He said during the election campaign, there were no clashes among UNP, PA or JVP supporters. Only two minor incidents had occurred among the UNP supporters. Otherwise the entire election campaign was conducted in Hanguranketha in a peaceful manner.

"After I crossed over to the UNP and assumed duties of the Ministerial portfolio, I called on all PA supporters to my residence and briefed them on my decision to leave the PA. As a result, 100 per cent of the PA supporters in Hanguranketha extended their cooperation to me for the UNP election campaign. Finally a group of candidates were selected by me to contest the Local Government election."

He said all UNP candidates and their supporters peacefully engaged in their campaign.

The Minister said that if any incidents have been reported, election observers or anybody else can visit the Hanguranketha electorate to clarify it.
