North East polls on September 25

by Manjula Fernando

The Local Government elections in the North and East, including Ampara district have been postponed to September 25 by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake. The new date has already been notified to the relevant Government Agents (GAs) by the Elections Secretariat, official sources told the Daily News yesterday.

Earlier the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake scheduled the Local Government polls for the 71 local authorities in the North and East for Monday (March 25).

The decision to postpone the polls is said to have been taken by the Elections Commissioner in view of strong representations made by Tamil political parties and the North and East Government Agents.

They have pointed out that it is still premature to hold an election in their areas despite the ongoing peace process.

They have said this is not the time to conduct an election in the North and East as difficulties are still encountered in reaching some of the uncleared areas to set up polling stations.

According to official sources at the Ampara District Secretariat elections for eight Local Government Bodies in the Sinhala populated areas including for the Ampara Urban Council will be held as scheduled on March 25.

The elections for seven other Local Government Bodies in Tamil and Muslim populated areas in the Ampara district -Kalmunai UC, Karativu PS, Sainthamarudu PS, Karankoditivu PS, Akkaraiapattu PS, Tirukkovil PS and Pottuvil PS - will be held on September 25.
