Tobacco Death Clock unveiled in Geneva Every eight seconds someone dies in some part of the world because of the use of tobacco products especially cigarettes. A Death Clock giving an update of the number of lives needlessly lost to tobacco disease since the commencement of the negotiations of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was unveiled on Monday by Ambassador Luiz Felipe de Seixas Corria of Brazil. The ceremony took place at the Center for International Conferences in Geneva. Present at the ceremony were over 150 delegates and 50 NGO representatives as well as the Director General of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland. From March 18 to 23, 192 nations are meeting for the fourth time in Geneva to negotiate this pioneering convention which will save millions of lives from untimely death due to cigarette smoking. Dr. Lashmi Somatunga, the official delegate from Sri Lanaka and Mr. Olcott Gunasekera, representing the NGOs of the South East Asian Region (SEAR) countries of the WHO were also present at the occasion. |
