Complaints Centre for Women receives 209 complaints by Nadira Gunatilleke The special Complaints Centre for Women set up by the Women's Affairs Ministry at No.177, Nawala Road, Narahenpita, Colombo 5 to help women in distress has received 209 complaints up to March 18 this year. Most of these complaints are concerning maintenance and divorce, Legal Officer Women's Complain Centre, P. Pathiranage told the "Daily News" yesterday. Mr. Pathiranage said that the total number of complaints received last year was 793 while 856 complaints were received in 2000. The number of complaints received in January, 2002 is 74 while 85 complaints have been received in February. 50 complaints have been received in March up to the 18th. According to Mr. Pathiranage, a majority of those complaints were regarding domestic violence. Next come employment problems mostly concerning promotions. These have also been complaints about sexual harassment, land disputes and family problems. Women in distress can obtain the services of this centre free of charge. The centre offers a host of services including free legal advice. Complaints relating to all kinds of injustices, abuse, violence and harassment will be entertained by this centre. Women can visit the centre and lodge their complaints personally or they can lodge their complaints through telephone Nos (01-505135, 01-555072), a fax massage (01-505380), e-mail ([email protected]) or by post (letter). The centre is open from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on week days. Women can visit the centre and discuss their problems with the legal officers. The confidentiality of complainants will be strictly maintained. If there is no response from the centre within three weeks from the date of complaint the complainant should inquire from the legal officer attached to the centre. |
