Election verdict approves peace program - PM Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in a statement issued yesterday thanked all voters for exercising their franchise according to their conscience at Wednesday's Local Government election and said their verdict approved the government's program for achieving lasting peace through a political solution. The Prime Minister said the voters had also affirmed the government's march towards consensus politics by eschewing confrontational politics. The people by their verdict had accepted and approved the policies of the United National Front government. "This is a great strength to the government and we bow our heads to the people for giving us that strength," the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister further said as a whole the local government election had been a free, peaceful and fair election. Election malpractices had been minimal when compared to the election held jointly by former President D. B. Wijetunga and him in 1994. "But that alone is insufficient for us to feel contented. Our prime aim is to ensure fully independent and fair elections in this country. We are truly dedicated to create the necessary environment for it and that is why the setting up of the Constitutional Council has become urgent," the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister thanked all voters for exercising their votes according to their conscience. He also thanked UNP Deputy Leader Minister Karu Jayasuriya for spearheading the United National Front election campaign and the UNP Chairman, General Secretary, UNF leaders and their membership for helping in the campaign. |
