by Bernard Perera

Colombo Super Cross 2002 organised by the Sri Lanka Army and conducted by Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association will be held on March 24 at Battaramulla race track commencing at 8.30 a.m. This was disclosed at a press briefing held at Sapphire Hotel Wellawatte, recently.

Major General Lohan Goonewardhene said that this is the only motor racing event conducted in Colombo. The Sri Lanka Army conducts four events annually namely Fox Hill, Gajaba Super Cross, Kurunegala Race Meet and the Colombo Super Cross.

He said why the army moved in for this was all proceeds of these are used for the welfare of the disabled soldiers and the families of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country during the North-East Conflict. Every spectator who witnesses these events will be contributing to a worthy cause.

He also thanked the main sponsors Coca-Cola Beverages for joining hands to make this event a success.

He also added that last year the organisers had to face a few problems. Damage caused to the track due to heavy rains which prevailed two days before. To sort out matters the Road Development Authority came forward to help overcome these problems and also to construct a bridge over the canal. These have eased our problems, he said.

Upali Dassanayake, President of the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association told the media though he faced problems last year but the event was a success. This year it is expected to be more interesting with many Indian riders participating and a total of 26 events on the card. Last year the meet attracted over 350 riders and drivers. It is hoped that this Super Cross could attract many more this year. There will be 13 motor cycle events and 13 events for four wheelers. The most interesting events will be the open event for two wheelers and the super cars event for four wheelers he said.

Lakshman Pieris, Brand Manager of Coca Cola Beverages Ltd speaking on the occasion said that last year his company was the beverage supplier for the event and it was a success and this year the company decided to sponsor the event wholly. This combination with sports also help us get to the customer in a very close way. This combination also would prove the customer it is not only business from us but also our closeness to sports he said. He thanked the organisers for giving this opportunity to join hands in an event that caters to various categories of spectators.

Upali Gunasena, President of the Battaramulla Sports Club who too have joined in organising the event thanked Sri Lanka Army and SL Racing Riders Association and said that they are ready to continue their support for this annual event.

Major General Lohan Goonewardene thanked the media for publicity extended for various events of this nature and requested their fullest co-operation in the future too.
