Seetha Devi and Christ Church hockey champions

by our Kandy sports correspondent

Seetha Devi Balika, Kandy (girls) and Christ Church College, Matale (boys) emerged champions at the seven a side girls and boys under-19 all-island hockey tournament conducted by Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya for the eighth successive year and worked off at Police grounds, Kandy.

This was Seetha Devi BV's fifth title win in eight years and they have now done it three years in a row. In the finals Seetha Devi Greens overcame some stiff opposition to beat Vijaya College, Matale 1-0 in the finals.

For the Seetha Devi stickers this was a praise worthy performance after they had scraped through to the finals by defeating Mahamaya Girls College 3-2 on penalty strokes after the match itself had ended in a thrilling scoreless draw. In Imalka Samarasinghe they had a speedy and a thrustful forward who made capital out of any lapse by the opposing defence. Seetha Devi scored their winning goal midway in the first half when skipper Chaturangani Ratnayake sent a cross pass which Imalka Samarasinghe collected beautifully on the run to fox two defenders before sounding the boards.

Imalka Samarasinghe was also adjudged the 'Best Player of the Tournament' among the girls. Seetha Devi was coached by M. A. M. Ashroff.

In the boys finals Christ Church College, Matale pipped out President's College, Maharagama 1-0 to lift the title for boys.

Skipper and centre forward S. B. Dissanayake scored the winning goal for Christ Church during the dying stages of the game. S. B. Dissanayake who had overall a fine tournament and was the mainstay to the Christ Church team and was adjudged the 'Best Player of the Tournament' in the tournament for boys.

UNP Parliamentarian for Kandy District Lucky Jayawardena was the chief guest and he distributed the awards.

Lucky Jayawardena in his address said that it was a fine achievement that a girls' school like Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya had organised a major hockey tournament attracting 32 boys schools and 16 girls schools from all parts of the island, and they must be encouraged.
