Defence budget slashed

Government expenditure for the year 2002 has been estimated at Rs.348 billion.

This shall be met from payments out of the Consolidated Fund or any other fund or monies of, or at the disposal of, the Government and from the proceed of loans authorised to be raised in or outside Sri Lanka.

The Appropriation Bill covers the financial year beginning from January 1, 2002 and ending December 31, 2002.

The significant move in the Bill is that the defence budget has been reduced to Rs.50 billion when compared to the previous year. The recurrent expenditure is estimated to Rs.41 billion and capital expenditure to rupees nine billion.

Financial allocations for the President's Office was Rs.290 million (recurrent) and Rs.38 million (capital). Prime Minister's Office was Rs.55.9 million (recurrent) and Rs.50 million (capital).

Special consideration had also given to improve the education sector in the country allocating Rs.23 billion. Meanwhile, Rs.24,421 million had allocated for Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Welfare.

Estimated recurrent and Capital expenditures for other Ministries as follows:

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Rs.10,064 million and Rs.5,319 million.

Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training Rs.5,444 million and Rs.1,970 million.

Ministry of School Education Rs.18.7 million and Rs.136.6 million.

Ministry of Samurdhi Rs.15,222 million and Rs.161 million.

Ministry of Health,Nutrition and Welfare Rs.19,331 and Rs.5,090 million.

Ministry of Employment and Labour Rs.901 million and Rs.143 million.

Ministry of Public Administration, Management and Reforms Rs.26,239 million and Rs.151 million.

Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation: Rs.528.8 million and Rs.236 million.

Ministry of Power and Energy: Rs.483 million and Rs.9,914 million.

Ministry of Transport,Highways and Aviation: Rs.4,402 million and Rs.3,470.8 million.

Minister of Highways: Rs.41 million and Rs.9,610 million.

Ministry of State Transport: Rs.1,383 million and Rs.4.2 million.

Ministry of Finance : Rs.19,648 million and Rs.42,571 million.

Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Rs.5,227 million and Rs.939 million.

Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion: Rs.585.3 million and Rs.1,290 million.

Ministry of Industries Rs.25.5 million and Rs.100.7 million.

Ministry of Port Development and Shipping Rs.95.4 million and Rs.3,577 million.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rs.3,118 million and Rs.143 million.

Ministry of Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs: Rs.110 million and Rs.281 million.

Ministry of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure Rs.244 million and Rs.7,681 million.

Ministry of Housing Development: Rs.25 million and Rs.89 million.

Ministry of Estate Infrastructure Rs.67 million and Rs.119.6 million.

Ministry of Urban and Public Utilities Rs.27 million and Rs.95 million.

Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Rs.343 million and Rs.1,522 million.
