A grant of US$ 282,000 was made available to the Government of Sri Lanka by the Government of Japan under the Japan Social Development Fund as a complement to the World Bank Funded legal and judicial reform project in order to address the needs of legal services of the poor women in Sri Lanka. The grant will be administered by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, states a Finance Ministry press release. This grant will be utilised to provide legal and related services to women, including mediation, psychological counselling and medical services in cases involved with domestic abuse violence, alimony and child custody and related matters. Training for judges and court personnel on violence, family law issues, gender concerns and sensitivities will also be covered under this grant. Further this grant assists in conducting legal aid services and workshops to educate public on laws affecting women and to develop and distribute materials on women's rights and laws. The Letter of Agreement was signed by Ms. Mariana Todorova, the Country Director, World Bank Office, Colombo and Mr. Charitha Ratwatte, Secretary, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the World Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka respectively in presence of the Japanese Ambassador His Excellency, Mr. Seiichiro Otsuka.
