Major blaze at British asylum centre LONDON, Friday (AFP) Major fires have broken out at a British asylum centre following a "civil disturbance" which could have been a break-out attempt, fire services said overnight Friday. "We got a call at 2013 (local and GMT Thursday), when we sent three appliances," a Bedfordshire (central England) Fire Service spokeswoman told AFP shortly after midnight. The fires broke out at the Yarlswood asylum centre, near Bedford, following a civil disturbance, she said. Asked whether the fire was under control, the spokeswoman said: "Another five appliances were called for at midnight which suggests its ongoing." A source at the centre said: "It certainly appears to be a breakout attempt and we suspect some people have escaped, but we can't say for sure yet." |
