No serious acts of polls violence

No serious acts of election violence have been reported so far on the run up to the Local Government Polls, according to the Police Election Secretariat.

Only 40 acts of election violence have been reported from 380 Police divisions. Only one incident has been reported from Chilaw division, where the highest number of incidents took place in the previous General Election, DIG Police Election Secretariat Gamini Navaratne said.

If politicians are more law abiding, acts of election violence can be minimised, he said. If such incidents take place, the police has no option, but to intervene, he added. Anyone involved in acts of election violence can be arrested without a warrant, according to the DIG Navaratne. Ballot papers will be distributed between March 4 to 12 under the special security arrangements, he said.
