The Samanala Adaviya (Peak Wilderness) Environment Development Program has been launched as a National priority in keeping with the United Nation's International Mountain Development Year, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources announced yesterday.

Minister Rukman Senanayake said that the main aim was the development and conservation of Sri Pada area in accordance with the long-term scientific and cultural mountain management plan, based on the bio-diversity concept.

One aspect of the program is to promote awareness among the people of the villages around Sri Pada area and to win their participation in the conservation process.

The other is to increase awareness of management, disposal and minimisation of solid waste while at the same time promoting their knowledge of plants and natural resources that are locally important. Ministry sources said that 2 million toffee covers, 100,000 biscuit packet covers and 2 million plastic bottles had been collected in the pilgrimage area within 25 days.
