Breakthrough in Kataragama burglary by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Three suspects in connection with the burglary of the residence of "Kapu Mahattaya" of the Kataragama Devalaya were taken into custody by the officials attached to the Katuwana Police. The breakthrough was made when Police arrested one prime suspect on a tip off on Thursday. The suspect residing in the Walasmulla area was a wanted man who has been accused of several other crimes too. "On the statement given by this suspect, we were able to track-down two other suspects who were directly involved in this robbery." Katuwana OIC SI D. J. Karanayake told the Daily News yesterday. One of these suspects is said to be a monk and the investigation has revealed that the vehicle used in the robbery belonged to him. It has gone from Moratuwa. According to Police, the total number of persons involved in this robbery is 10 and already, a man-hunt has been launched to take them into custody. Police have recovered a sum of around Rs. 300,000 in the possession of these suspects.Besides, two home made guns (Gal Katas) and live bullets have also been uncovered together with two gold chains stolen from the Kapu Mahattaya's residence. Suspects have confessed to the Police that they had robbed around Rs. three million which was in 50, 100 and 500 currency notes together with jewellery worth around Rs. two million. They have also told Police that the persons who took the jewellery are hiding and they could not find them. Further investigations are under way to arrest the suspects who are absconding. |
