Over 6,000 refugees to return from India

by Anura Maitipe

Over 6000 Tamil refugees who had migrated to India due to the protracted war situation in the North and East of Sri Lanka will return to the Island, the Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugee ministry sources told the Daily News on Friday.

These people who had been lived in the Jaffna peninsula have sought refuge in the Tamil Nadu state of India following the escalation of civil war in the peninsula. And this has caused a severe burden on the Indian government, sources said.

Following the truce declared between the government and the LTTE these people have urged the governments of India and Sri Lanka to make safe passage for their return, sources added.

The neglected houses of these people in Jaffna have been badly damaged and some of them have been reduced to rubble due to the protected war during last 20 years, source said.

Meanwhile, on the directive of the Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana arrangements have been made to provide basic amenities to resettle these families in their own properties, sources said.

Minister Jayawardena has also discussed with other relevant ministries on ways to uplift their day to day livelihood by providing them fishing equipment, seeds, fertilizer, chemicals and transport etc, sources said.
