A Buddha image on Elephant Rock Kurunegala

The Hasthisailapura buduruwa samithiya - led by Y. B. Dissanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of North Western Province Development with a working committee, of members who hold responsible positions in the government and private sector have launched the construction of samadhi posture image on the elephant rock as a sacred place of worship.

The image structure will be 30 meters high, on the summit of the massive rock, 214 meters above ground level. The structured basement eight meters high, will serve as the area for worship and as an administration block which is called "Garbhagrhua" the samadhi image will be 22 meters high.

It will no doubt be a unique landmark. Designing and meticulous planning of this colossal task has been done by a team of competent engineers and architects with a firm commitment, and a sense of devotion. They will supervise the entire construction free of charge.

35th Sir Baron Jayatilaka memorial lecture

The 35th annual public lecture organised by the Colombo YMBA to commemorate the late Sir Baron Jayatilaka, former Leader of the State Council, Minister of Home Affairs and the first President of the Colombo YMBA will be held at the YMBA Hall Borella at 5 pm. on Wednesday February 13, 2002 which is the Birth Anniversary of Sir Baron Jayatilaka.

This memorial lecture will be delivered by Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, President Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Sramadana Sangamaya on "A Buddhist Vision for the Future".

The President of the Colombo YMBA Noel Wijenaike who will preside over the proceedings will garland the bust of Sir Baron Jayatilaka.

The Lecturer will be introduced by Rajah Kuruppu, Member of the Board and the Vote of Thanks would be proposed by Nalin J. Abesekera, Board Member.

The Sir Baron Jayatilaka commemoration song will be sung by a group of students of Sujata Vidyalaya, Nugegoda.

Ancient cemetery detected

The ruins of a cemetery belonging to around the time 8 BC was found in Rangirigama area about 4 km away from the Sigiriya rock, under the Sigiriya cultural project.

According to the Cultural Triangle officials the ruins of Ibbankatuwa cemetery which was found by the Dambulla Cultural Triangle Project are similar to Rangirigama cemetery.

However the better part of the premises of this newly detected cemetery has been used for cultivation activities by the farmers. A small portion of land still remains for that cemetery. The officials of the Cultural Triangle said that after excavation of this area the valuable ruins can be detected.

Death fall from mango tree

A father (58) of five children died after a fall from a mango tree.

This was revealed at an inquest held on the death of Hewa Gamage Carolis, a resident of Bulegahawatta Thalamponuwa, by the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths L. M. S. Jayantha.

The wife of the deceased R. Misihamy and R. A. Chandrasena gave evidence at the inquiry.

The Inquirer into Sudden Deaths recorded a verdict of sudden death due to a fall from a mango tree.

Gnanatissa of Hungama police led evidence.

Medical clinics for uncleared areas

The Provincial Health Department in Trincomalee will conduct ten medical clinics in the uncleared areas of Mutur and Verugal divisions in the Trincomalee district. The UNICEF has donated a vehicle to the Provincial Health Department for the purpose. The Department sources said that the proposed clinic could start their operation from March. At present the ICRC is conducting few medical clinics in the uncleared areas.

A program has been drawn up by the Provincial Health Department to immunize all newly born babies in the uncleared areas where no clinics were conducted for such people. They will be given tetanus toxoid to prevent tetanus among newly born babies. It has been found that expectant mothers in the uncleared areas did not attend clinics to obtain injections.

It has also been organised to immunize all females between the ages of 15 to 45 years with tetanus toxoid. Two doses will be given within a period of six weeks. In addition 'rubella' vaccination will also be given to females.
