Tamil kids in UK can study in mother tongue

by Reggie Fernando our London correspondent

Thousands of Tamil children from Sri Lanka resident in Britain will have the opportunity of studying 'key parts of the curriculum' in their mother tongue.

According to a report just published they will be taught subjects such as science and maths in Tamil while they study and master English.

David Daniels the headmaster of the school where this facility was first introduced said: "Any time of a given week, a child may arrive at this school from any part of the world, literary not speaking a word of English. It can be three years for a pupil to acquire enough English to access the curriculum for 14 to 16 year-olds, yet we have children in that position who may be quite able in maths and science."

He further said: "It seems wrong they should have to put those subjects behind them while they learn English".
