STC old boys in action by Pelham Juriansz The old boys of S. Thomas College Mount Lavinia will take on the present boys in a two day annual match at Mount Lavinia today and tomorrow. The old boys will be led by their former opening batting centurion hero now turned Warden David Ponniah. The others in the side include a number of former skippers in wicket keeper batsman Ken de Alwis who skippered the Thomian side in 1982. Ranil Abeynaike the skipper of 1973 now an expert commentator and the hard hitting G. D. V. (Donga) Perera, consistent scorer. Ishak Sahabdeen will bolster the bowling and batting of the old boys. The younger generation of Thomians will be represented by Gihan Fernando (last year's skipper) and the attractive batting star of the 1997 Thomian victory, Bhatiya Karunaratne, who plays for CCC. Others who have donned the Thomian blazer now turning out for the old boys will be the centenary hero Mahinda Halangoda and Dayal de Silva. The cynosure of all eyes for the present boys will no doubt be young Jeevan Mendis who was the toast of the country at the recently concluded Under 19 world Cup in New Zealand. The present boys team will be captained by Dilshan Gunawardene and will include Denham Williams, Heshan Pieris, young Vignesh Balasubramanium amongst others. |
