Six sports teams to Germany

by Bernard Perera

The Asian German Sports Exchange Programme has planned to offer tours to six teams from five sports to Germany during a period of four months.

The teams that are to leave for Germany are Table Tennis six players, Badminton (eight), Handball team, Football (women) two teams and Tennis).

The first team will leave on April 21, 2002, while the women's soccer team (Police) and the tennis teams are scheduled to leave on June 6 and return on 24.

According to Dietmar Doering, chief of AGSEP, the teams are selected with a view to promoting sports. These tours will expose local sportsmen and women to face international arena, he said.

He also added that all teams on reaching Germany will travel to various parts of the country to play their opponents.

The players on tour will be looked after by the opposing sides giving them the opportunity to familiarise with Germans.

He further said in return Germans too will visit Sri Lanka representing the same sports disciplines. Here the AGSEP plans to take these German sportsmen and women to play in uncleared areas of the country.

This programme would help usher peace to the country. Sports play a vital role among communities, Doering explained. This also could help tourism he said, this kind of programmes could also prove the world that Sri Lanka is a safe destination for tourists.

Doering said Sri Lanka women's soccer which was introduced recently has reached great heights and it was the reason his organisation thought it fitting to offer them the opportunity to gain more knowledge on the sport from German counterparts.

He paid a glowing tribute to police department for organising women's soccer at a very high standard.

This was the main reason why they included the police team in addition to the national team, he said.

Germans who visit Sri Lanka in the latter part of the year too will be hosted by Lankan players, he said.
