Unitary status of country must be ensured - JVP

JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa speaking at a JVP rally at Nugegoda (Wednesday) said the government and the LTTE were conspiring to harm the territorial integrity of the country.

He said it was the duty of all the progressive people and the entire Civil society to voice their strong disapproval to any possible moves taken by the United National Front government to divide the country and betray the rights of the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people in the North East.

JVP Colombo District MP Wimal Weerawansa made these comments at a JVP rally to inform the public of the JVP's objections to a possible de-proscription of the LTTE by the government.

Wimal Weerawansa observed that the only possible solution for the conflict was to ensure the neglected rights of the Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, and Malay people within the framework of a unitary Sri Lanka.

The JVP Propaganda Secretary described how the Tamil Tigers are using the on-going ceasfire observed by the government and the LTTE to further strengthen their weaponry and conscript child soldiers.

He noted that the LTTE had even begun to collect ransom money from poor Muslim families in the East and all these sinister attempts are being made by the Tigers using the ceasfire to good effect.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna will never allow either the UNF or any other party in the country to divide the country and that if it so demands they will even take their protests onto the streets.

JVP Anuradhapura District MP Lal Kantha read out a message sent to the rally by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Leader Somawansa Amerasinghe from London.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva and National List MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake also spoke.
