Many programs for consumer welfare Monitoring of rice stocks held by Pettah traders to ensure an uninterrupted supply of the commodity to consumers at a reasonable and creating public awareness about the consumers' rights guaranteed by the consumer protection law are some of the development programs envisaged by the Internal Trade Unit of the Colombo Kachcheri to coincide with the arrangements of the 100 days accelerated development programme. Offer-in-charge of the unit A.W. Madurawela said investigations into consumer complaints against trade malprictices have also been expedited under this program and 18 raids have already been conducted on suspected trading houses last month alone. Mr. Madurawela said his unit will take stern action against traders found guilty of fleecing customers by over price marking goods, failure to display price lists, creating artificial shortages by sending stocks underground and selling goods after the lapse of the expiry date. Officers of the unit will also inspect all CWE and Co-operative shops in the Colombo District on a regular basis to ensure that they conform to the stipulations of the consumer protection law to safeguard consumer interests. |
