State bodies owe Rs. 251m to LRB by Florence Wickramage State Institutions owe the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation Corporation a sum of Rs. 251 million for projects carried out by the then Land Reclamation Board. The first 100 days would be utilised to collect such dues to enable the Corporation to carry out the program of work outlined for the current year, said V. Sathyanandan, Chairman of the Corporation. Furthermore there are instances where houses and land belonging to the Corporation is still being illegally occupied by individuals. One such instance is the illegal occupation of a state house by a former Provincial Council Minister who is still insisting that the house belongs to him. Despite cordial negotiations with the person concerned, the Corporation had to finally resort to legal action to evict the illegal occupant, Mr. Sathyanandan said. Largest among current debtors to the Corporation is the Urban Development Authority (UDA) which owes the Corporation a sum of Rs. 133.1 million. The National Housing Authority owes Rs. 12.6 million, The Ministry of Defence Rs. 14.8 million while old unpaid dues of the UDA stands at Rs. 14.0 million. Outstanding dues from other institutions account for Rs. 39.7 million, said Chairman V. Sathyanandan. While action is being taken to reutilise land and monies so far wasted, development work undertaken by the Corporation is being pursued. Mr. Sathyanandan said locations where illegal land reclamation is being carried out is being monitored and action will be taken to cancel such licences. In the meantime the JBIC funded 6200 million yen for Attidiya-Kawdana Flood Prevention Project and 6900 million yen Greater Colombo Flood Control and Environment Improvement Project, Phase 3 is in progress Chairman Sathyanandan confirmed. |
