Govt. keen on providing opportunities to all

by Gampaha south group correspondent

Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya addressing a meeting at Gampaha said that the UNF Government was interested in providing opportunities for all persons in the country breaking barriers between rural and urban areas. This would benefit to improve the country's income sources.

The meeting followed the opening of the Gampaha branch office of Samagi Insurance Company of the National Cooperative Council.

Minister Jayasuriya opened the branch office.

While commenting on the principles of the co-operative movement the Minister said the service of the movement was not limited to commodity purchasing. It is a movement that has wide opportunities to engage in airways, transport, communication and other international business involvements. Most of the developed countries in the world have gained their prosperity through the co-operative movement.

Referring to the history of the country's co-operative movement, he said this movement was very popular in the country in the past. But today it is not so. We must not neglect the importance of the co-operative movement because it was the movement that has played an important role when the country was in danger.

This is a movement that is administered by its membership. Steps should be taken to avoid political interference, added Minister Jayasuriya.

Gampaha district MP Pandu Bandaranayaka said the PA was prepared to co-operate with the government to solve the major problems and to assist the development programs of the Government.

National Co-operative Council and the Samagi Insurance Company Chairman Lionel Samarasinghe said that the company had taken steps, to open its branch offices in several areas to coincide with the Government's 100 days program.
