Treasure hunters remanded

by Kegalle special correspondent

Some treasure hunters who have formed into a band in their efforts to get a treasure believed to be hidden near a rock in Atugoda area, in the Kegalle police division were taken into custody by the Kegalle police a few days ago.

The treasure hunters were from distant places like Kala Oya, Rajangana, Nocchiyagama and Chilaw and also from Atugoda itself.

Eight people versed in secret magic or 'mantra', have taken part in this treasure hunt. They have been making necessary preparations to exhume the treasure, supposed to be buried at the foot of this massive rock, in a land commonly known in the area as 'Daluggale', belonging to one K. Podisingho, a resident villager in that locality.

All these people had travelled to Atugoda in a van and from there they walked to Daluggale rock situated in a shrubland, a short distance away.

The police on a tip off arrived at the place when the treasure hunters were about to leave, but the special police team from Kegalle police station was able to arrest them. The police discovered several implements like hammers, mammoties, 'alawangoes' and iron rods that were brought by the treasure hunters for excavations and breaking of granite at the spot.

In addition to these the police also found a parcel of powdered sandlewood, some copper plates, the 'Maha Pirith Pota' and some more copper plates in which magic formulae (mantra) have been scrolled, battery operated torches, among many other things like various kinds of 'magically treated' oil in several phials.

The police produced the eight suspects apprehended, before Kegalle magistrate Priyantha de Silva who ordered all of them to be remanded.
