Hope for stronger China-Lanka ties by Nadira Gunatilleke The People's Republic of China will extend its fullest support for Sri Lanka's future development activities. We wish that bilateral ties existing between the two countries will grow stronger, Chinese Ambassador Jiang Qinzheng said. He was addressing the gathering after handing over 706 sets of water pumps including transport and insurance to Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera at his office on Wednesday (6). The Ambassador said that the People's Republic of China granted Rs. 2 million to the Sri Lankan Government earlier, responding to the call made by the Sri Lankan Government to the International community for assistance during the recent drought. "I hope that these water pumps will ease the hardships faced by the people live in the south, he said. Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera thanked the People's Republic of China and its Ambassador for helping the Sri Lankan people who suffered due to the long standing drought. Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Ms. Viji Jegarasasingam also spoke. Director, Social Services, Ms. Nimala Pathirana, Deputy Director Hettiarachchi and officials of the Chinese Embassy and Social Welfare Ministry were also present. Earlier the Government made a donation of eight water pumps. Agricultural Consultant Mr. Isaac Isaac will advise the Sri Lankan Government on farming in the Dry Zone and arid conditions, utilizing water resources available. He will also conduct a familiarization course for mechanical instructors. Mr. Isaac Isaac will be in Sri Lanka till February 10. |
