Local polls: Nominations close today by Manjula Fernando Deputy Elections Commissioner, M. C. Arunthavachelvam will announce the date for the Local Government Elections after closing nominations today. The announcement is to be made after 1.30 p.m., Elections Department sources told the Daily News yesterday. The Deputy Commissioner will make the announcement on behalf of the Elections Commissioner who is currently out of the country. The allocation of symbols for all contesting parties and independent groups will take place the same afternoon. Subsequently, arrangements will be made to gazette the contesting parties, independent groups and their election symbols within several days, the sources said. The United National Party and People's Alliance began handing over their nominations on Wednesday and the first nomination list of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was expected to be handed over yesterday afternoon. The PA submitted their nominations on Wednesday for Wattala/Mabola Urban Council and Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha in the Gampaha District, Rattota and Ukuwela Pradeshiya Sabhas in Matale District and the Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha in Puttalam district. UNP nominations were submitted for Dehiattakandiya, Damana, Maha Oya, Namal Oya, Lahugala and Padiyatalawa Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Ampara district on the same day. Two new political parties - the North East Muslim Congress and the Ceylon Democratic Unit Alliance - will contest the Local Government Polls this year. Fifty one recognised political parties will be in the fray. However, the three parties (EPRLF, People's Liberation Solidarity Fund and National Unity Alliance) which were rejected at the Parliamentary election last year because of the presence of rival groups within their parties will not be allowed to contest this year as well. |
