Caltex to power indoor cricket

Cricket in Sri Lanka needs no special introduction. Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited the pre-eminent lubricant marketer in Sri Lanka has joined hands with the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association for the forthcoming Australia tour of Sri Lanka.

This tour will be the first tour in the event calendar for the current year. Australia the current world champions in Indoor Cricket will play a 3 Test series at the Austasia Sports Complex at Thalawathugoda from January 20-27, 2002.

Indoor cricket has fast gained popularity amongst many cricket loving fans and mercantile institutions here in Sri Lanka. Speaking at the press conference Vajira Abeysinghe, Head of Sales and Marketing - Caltex said "Caltex has primarily been associated with motor sports locally and globally. Caltex has worked hard in uplifting the standards of motor sports in Sri Lanka. Caltex embarked on a two pronged strategy to enhance motor sports by firstly introducing a structured sponsorship program for racing drivers and riders. This resulted in an increased number of talented individuals being more competitive in their respective categories. Increased participation at all levels is another factor that determined the future of motor sports.

The company's commitment to upgrade motor sports in Sri Lanka was evident with the opening of the Caltex Prokart track at Millennium Park. The track is a heaven to all experienced drivers and it also serves to promote the sport and develop new talent. But in the past we have also supported many other sports such as Yatching, Cricket, Rugby, Athletics and Golf. Currently we are in to our third year with the sponsorship of Rugby.

We are pleased with the results achieved by sponsoring rugby and look forward to doing many new activities around the game. Hence, this is our first time in sponsoring indoor cricket. I'm confident that our team will be up to the world champs mark very soon."

The history of indoor cricket goes back to the late 1970s when it first made its appearance in Perth, Western Australia. Indoor cricket originally, was played as a domestic game, but its inherent advantages over traditional cricket made it very popular and the game spread very fast, first in Australia and then overseas. International recognition came equally fast. Within a few years indoor cricket was accepted as an international game. In Sri Lanka the CICA was instrumental in introducing the game to locals. It has been very well accepted and many mercantile tournaments are also played.

Sri Lanka hopes to host the World Cup in 2004. CICA is a fully fledged member of the world body of indoor cricket.
